Rep. Thomas Massie thinks it’s time for “amexit.”
The Republican congressman from Kentucky renewed his call for America to leave the United Nations Saturday, days after citizens in the United Kingdom narrowly voted to leave the European Union. Massie, referencing the Brexit vote, suggested it might be America’s turn in a post on his Facebook page Saturday afternoon.
“Time for #amexit?” he wrote. “I’m a cosponsor of H.R. 1205 to get the US out of the UN. ”
The bill, titled the American Sovereignty Restoration Act of 2015, would pull the United States out of the intergovernmental organization and end America’s involvement with United Nations affairs, like its peacekeeping operations and the World Health Organization. Massie was a co-sponsor of the bill, which was introduced with five other lawmakers last March.
Massie, in a comment on his Facebook post, said the bill was about preserving America’s sovereignty. “As a member of the UN, we bind our citizens to decisions made by undemocratic countries, when in fact our constitution should be the supreme law,” he wrote.
The bill was assigned to the House Foreign Affairs committee after its introduction, but is unlikely to make it to the floor.
