LOUISVILLE, KY. — Authorities were working to round up loose barges Wednesday after one struck the base of an Ohio River bridge in Louisville.
The U.S. Coast Guard received a report at 8:10 p.m. on Tuesday that a vessel pushing 15 loaded coal barges made contact with the Clark Memorial Bridge, causing the barges to break free.
A release from the Coast Guard Wednesday afternoon said six barges had been recovered and nine had stalled at a lock and dam west of the bridge. Two had possibly capsized.
The vessel’s owner, the Tennessee Valley Towing Company, was also working to secure the barges along with the Army Corps of Engineers.
Indiana state transportation officials temporarily closed the bridge but reopened it after a safety inspection.
The cause of the incident was under investigation.
