PADUCAH, KY –If you have family or friends coming to town and they haven’t booked a hotel yet for the total solar eclipse, you might want to make some room for them on your couch.

The eclipse is still several weeks away but nearly all hotels in the path of totality are sold out. The few rooms still available come at a hefty price the night before the eclipse.

For example, at the Metropolis Super 8 it’ll cost you a whopping $700 a night. The following week that same room is listed for $68.

The last available room at Americas Best Value Inn Land Between the Lakes is going for $333 a night, compared to $55 one week later.

Becky Straley, with the Paducah Convention & Visitors Bureau, says the rise in room rates isn’t surprising.

“It’s absolutely legal,” says Straley. “It’s absolutely ethical. Hotel rooms are a commodity just like an airline seat is. The prices are based strictly on supply, demand, and guest willingness to pay. The eclipse certainly would equate to a Super Bowl.”

Airbnb still has a few options available, including a loft in downtown Paducah for $2,500 a night. The owner says she knows the price is outrageous but if someone is willing to pay it, she says there’s no harm in putting it out there.

In Hopkinsville there’s two acre camping site listed for $1000 a night. One person listed their sofa on Airbnb for $25 a night.

If you’d like to help out and make some extra money during the total solar eclipse, post a listing on Airbnb. Click here to learn how.
