More Kentuckians will have access to preventative health screenings thanks to the Kentucky One Health mobile screening unit.

It’s much smaller, but this mobile screening unit has everything your doctor’s office would have; a front desk, waiting area and a private exam room.  That’s where, Ultrasound Technician Michelle Teachey scanned my neck.  “We’re looking at a picture of the carotid artery.  We’re taking still and moving pictures of the carotid artery.  And then we were looking at the amount of blood flow, checking to see if there was any plaque or not.  and then we were checking the amount of blood flow that was going through the artery”

This was just one of the test offered on the mobile screening unit and it only took about five minutes.  If Teachey had seen anything abnormal she would have reported it to a physician for immediate care.  In my case, my test will be reviewed by a board certified physician and my results will be available in about a week.  Greg Giles is the Director of Ambulatory Operations and Development told us the goal is to bring preventative medical care to every corner of the Commonwealth.  “We really focus on a high-end cardiovascular screening here.  So detecting stroke, heart attack, peripheral artery disease and some other cardiac related conditions”

Patients are responsible for initial costs but you can submit a claim to your medical coverage provider for possible reimbursement.  Packages are for cardiovascular screening services and range from $139 to $297.  Tests include EKG’s, stroke and carotid artery ultrasounds, ECHO readings and several other heart related exams.  You can log onto WUKY dot org or KentuckyOneHealth.org/screenings to get a list of dates and locations for the mobile screening unit and to set up an appointment.
