FRANKFORT, KY. – Several state agencies are working together on an initiative to highlight the importance of properly disposing of old medications.

A statement from Pharmaceutical Researchers and Manufacturers of America says the organization is partnering with the Cabinet for Health and Family Services, the Cabinet for Justice and Public Safety and state police to launch MyOldMeds Kentucky during an event Tuesday at the Capitol.

Officials say it is one way to help fight prescription drug abuse, which has become a public health epidemic in the state.

The event will start a weeklong statewide effort to educate Kentuckians on how and why they should safely dispose of medications that are unwanted or expired. The initiative culminates Saturday with National Drug Take Back Day.
